Welcome to the Ewell Observatory!
The Ewell Observatory is located in Belmont California, just 25 miles south of San Francisco on the west coast of the United States of America. Our mission is to educate the public and educational institutions on the science of CCD astrophotography and basic astronomy. With the advent of low cast, high-quality telescope optics, CCD cameras and webcams, anyone with a modest budget can learn to take amazing images of the wonders of the universe. The Ewell Observatory is committed to public outreach and education. To this end, the observatory is partnered with the College of San Mateo as well as the San Mateo County Astronomical Society. |
About
the ObservatoryThe Ewell Observatory is run almost entirely with computers and robotics. This allows for remote control of telescopes, focusers, cameras, heaters and cooling systems all from within the observatory in a heated environment. The observatory servers are located on a high-speed wireless LAN allowing for full control of all systems from anywhere in the observatory as well as remotely over the Internet. All imaging sequences are fully automated. It is not uncommon for imaging sessions to run unattended for more than six hours at a time. |
The
Ewell Observatory Weather StationAs almost everyone knows, you cant always trust the weatherman. So the Ewell Observatory has installed a state-of-the-art weather station to monitor not only the outside weather, but also the temperature and humidity of telescopes and storage facilities. Using a computerized electronic system connected to the the weather station, the Ewell Observatory automates the processes of cooling scopes during the day, warming storage facilities in the evening, even closing the roll off roof if it starts to rain. Check out the conditions page to find out more about current weather conditions at the Ewell Observatory. |
